INDEPENDENCE
A Panamanian junta with the help of the United States navy has taken control of Panama from Columbia. The United States government has prevented the Columbian government from suppressing the rebellion with the Mallarino-Bidlack Treaty of 1846. The Republic of Panama has been recognized as the new nation of Panama. Panama City is the capital.
